Bride Rovers GAA Club notes & news round-up for the week.

Senior Hurlers lose out to Carrigtwohill…

Different venue, same result and in a similar fashion to last year’s defeat against the 2011 champions, where a late comeback was not enough to avoid the scenic route for our Senior Hurlers.

Following a very good opening period, Shane Walsh pounced to flick the ball to the empty net and a minute later a high ball towards goal was grabbed by Daniel Dooley who crashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net to give us a great start to this 1st round game in the beautifully prepared venue of Riverstown before a large attendance in balmy conditions.

Carrigtwohill soon got to grips with the game and with Waterford panellist Shane Fives starting (as was expected), they searched for some much-needed inspiration. It came in the 19th minute, with Captain Rob White getting their goal, and following this up with some sublime points, they led at half time 1-10 to 2-4.

An opening 15 minutes of complete dominance of the second half by the Carrig boys yielded 7 points to put them 9 up after 45 minutes, we had failed to register a score until Barry Johnson’s point in the 47th minute. It looked like a heavy defeat was on the cards, but with Carrig putting players back to defend the lead, and with some Rovers changes, we roared back into the game, With six points shared from Barry Johnson and Daniel Dooley and one from Owen Murphy, we cut the deficit to 2 but similarly to last year, we had momentum in this vital period. However with a injury time of 4 minutes to be played, and a second yellow card for Michael Liddane in the 58th minute, Carrigtwohill steadied the ship and Fives and Hogan, who was unerring from frees all evening, closed out the game. Carrig now move on to round 4 while we must wait on the losers of Douglas and Sarsfields in Round 2.

A creditable performance and the lads showed great spirit to come back but we must do it all again to remain in the championship race.

Scorers for Bride Rovers: B Johnson 0-8 (4f), Daniel Dooley 1-3, Shane Walsh 1-0, Owen Murphy, Michael Liddane 0-1.

Team: Dinny Fitzgerald; Donncha Carr, Brendan Walsh, M Liddane; Liam Forde, Brian Murphy, Michael Kearney; Jason Pratt, Cian O’Connor; Barry Johnson, Barry Murphy, Daniel Dooley; Michael Collins (C), Shane Walsh, Stephen Glasgow.

Pairc na Bride

On Sunday afternoon June 1st at Pairc na Bride we hosted a first round game in the Premier IHC between our neighbours Castlelyons and Watergrasshill. There was a fine attendance for this local derby and all went off very smoothly. Castlelyons edged home with two late Alan Fenton goals to send Watergrasshill to the losers’ group where Inniscarra await, while Castlelyons move to Round 4
