Underage Results

The U13 boys maintained their unbeaten run in the League on Friday evening after a well-earned victory over Shandonagh by the narrowest of margins. Well done to all.

However, the week belongs to our U15 boys who firstly had a super comeback win over Athlone on Wednesday evening by the minimum margin in a highly competitive game of football on a score-line of 4-08 to 4-07. Athlone were deserved half time leaders on a score-line of 4-04 to 1-03 however the second half was dominated by The Downs. With only five minutes remaining The Downs, a point behind, struck the crossbar and the upright and with Athlone then adding another point, it looked as though it wasn’t going to be The Downs night. However, a late goal from a floated free kick gave The Downs boys a one- point win with scenes of celebration at the final whistle. Athlone can count themselves very unlucky to have missed out given their contribution to a highly equal and competitive game of football. Following on from there the same bunch of lads went on to win their group and were crowned Féile Division 2 Champions in Athlone on Saturday. The Downs were drawn in a group with Athlone and Caulry. The first game was a repeat of the mid-week league game. The boys surged into an early lead that they never relinquished to earn their first win. Next up was Caulry. A very even first half ensued with The Downs showing great character and composure in the second half to deliver a one-point win. This was enough to qualify for the final where the boy’s opposition was our near neighbours Killucan. A high calibre final from the first whistle and despite conceding an early goal the boys in black and amber overcame a quality Killucan side as well as the elements to win by 4 points on a score-line of 2-05 to 2-01. There were great scenes of celebration from players and supporters alike as the boys now march on to the Leinster Division 2 competition on June 4th. A superb achievement for the lads. Many thanks to Athlone for hosting and we thank them for their hospitality. Na Dúnta Abú!!

Gaelic for Mothers and Others

The eagerly anticipated Gaelic for Mothers and Others made a welcome return to The Downs last Wednesday evening April 20th and what a success it turned out to be. Over 20 Mothers & Others put on their own boots for a change and completed a very enjoyable first football session. Although the aim of the game was enjoyment, there were some very impressive footballers returning to the field of play who looked very comfortable, challenged by some very capable beginners creating a competitive/fun environment. Many thanks to Martin Murtagh, ably assisted by Kieran Carroll for putting the women through their paces. A special mention to Anne-marie Corroon for organising and getting it off the ground again. If anyone is interested in joining the ladies, Wednesday at 8 p.m . is your opportunity.  Whether you have hung up the boots or never played before at G4M&O all are welcome to come join us for a fun, non-competitive introduction to Ladies football. If you are interested, please contact Anne-marie on 0874140184

Sympathy

The Downs GAA Club extends their sincere sympathy to the family of Paddy Flanagan, Millmount, Mullingar on his recent passing. A very prominent figure in Westmeath GAA circles and whom the Westmeath Senior Football Championship trophy is named after. Paddy donned the black and amber in his early football career lining out at Junior level for The Downs in 1948. A true legend of Westmeath football. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
