Senior

The senior footballers face Killanin this Saturday at 2.30pm in the Prairie in their final league game. A win could see Skgaa through to a Division 1 final for the first time in many years. Please come down and support the lads in this crucial game.

Huge congrats to Gearóid Armstrong who was the only Skgaa player to be selected on the Galway Club Senior Football Team of the Year. It is very much deserved after a fantastic season by Gearóid.

U20

The U20s defeated Moycullen on Saturday last in Pearse Stadium to win a third U20/21 West Board Championship in a row. The lads will now play Mountbellew Moylough in the county final (again for the third year in a row). It has been 29 long years since the club has won this title so let's hope the lads can get over the line this time. Details of final next week.

U11/12s welcomed Na Fianna from Dublin down to Cappagh park last Sunday to host the Enda Colleran tournament. Both clubs fielded 3 teams each in wintry conditions. There was some excellent games played with the tough tackling dubs showing SK the high standards of dublin football. SK however held their own and had 3 wins and 2 draws out of 9 games. Na Fianna 1 clinched the cup in the final game beating a gallant SK2 team by 9-6.  Thanks to Orla Colleran and son Cian who presented the cup to Na Fianna Huge thanks also to all parents who brought food etc up to Cappagh. Well done to all U11/12 who have had a long year U12 now finished until mid jan and U11s will finish end Nov and regroup in Feb.

U16

Hard luck to Gallant U16 's who were pipped in county final last Saturday v St Michaels Game in Oughterard at 230 Saturday. Falling behind in first half to an early goal and trailing by 1-3 to 0-2 at half time. SK raced out of blocks and had a great second half and led by 2 points heading into injury time . In a cruel twist with the game almost up Michaels launched a high ball in and in a scramble the ball flew into net with SK losing out by 1 pt in cruel fashion. Hard luck to Gerry Paul and all the team they show great character all year and in this game and hopefully this team will stick together now and go onto minor next year. We'll done lads keep the heads up you you did the club very proud .

School's Coaching

The first phase of our hurling/camogie Transition Year work experience programme is now in week 7 out of 9 weeks. Following a hands-on, induction training day in Scoil Bhride at the start of the programme, three  Transition Year students from the club have each week coached close to 100 pupils from Scoil Ide and Scoil Einne. The three students, Ciara Maloney, Rebecca Patten and MacDara O'Griofa have made excellent progress as young coaches, developing great rapport with the youngsters from senior infants, first and second classes in Scoil Ide and third class in Scoil Einne. The work experience programme is guided by Frank Keane and delivered with the help of a number of others, particularly James Molloy and Carol O'Connell. A second group of students from Colaiste na Coiribe will take part in Phase 2 of this work experience programme starting in February. This is the second year of the programme and feedback from the schools, the kids and parents is very positive.

The TY programme compliments the hurling and camogie coaching that Carol O'Connell is currently delivering it in Scoil Fhursa, Scoil Ide and Gael Scoil Mhic Amhlaigh, where she is coaching another 130 plus children weekly.

Coaching Corner

Take a look at some of the videos available to help develop fundamental movement skills. The first example shows what a 7 year old and older children should be capable of, then examples 2 (level of those typically less than 5 years) and 3 (target for those aged 5-7) show how to develop the skill of hopping. The video is just 3 minutes long and the teaching points of hopping are clearly explained and summarized at the end.  For this week, look at the hopping video here:

Children from Scoil Ide enjoy themselves under the watchful eye of Colaiste na Coiribe transition year student, and SK camogie, Rebecca Patten.
